Strategic Communication

Strategic communication, in its simplest form, identifies the matter by which the elements of the strategic plan are communicated to those responsible to implement the strategy.

Strategic communication impacts every element of the strategic plan including, values, vision, mission, SWOT, business plan, objectives, and the various elements of change management, because each of these elements relies upon words and phrases to communicate anticipated actions to others.

The basis of communication must be understood to deliver strategic plan content to the staff and for the staff to understand the direction conveyed by leadership. Thus leadership's communication style and each staff member's communication style should be considered when designing a strategic plan and when implementing strategic communication.

Validating strategic communication must be an ongoing process.

  • How is communication intended?

  • How is communication received?

  • Was the message received as intended?

  • How is a diagnostic process implemented to refine strategic communication?

Unlike the Field of Dreams where if you build it they will come, just because you say it does not mean you were understood.

The Big 5 personality types impact the sending and receiving of content. It is more likely for individuals with similar personality types to communicate accurately than for humans with dissimilar personality types to exchange content as the sender intended. An acute awareness of these dynamics will help to improve strategic communication.
